Marta Tejedor Bravo, MD, MSc, PhD, is a hepatologist and Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Iowa Health Care. She also serves as Clinical Director of the James A. Clifton Digestive Health Center. Dr. Tejedor Bravo has particular clinical and research expertise in advanced cirrhosis and its complications, with a special interest in hyponatremia, as well as disparities in access to liver transplantation. Her work combines a strong understanding of the pathophysiology of advanced liver disease with a practical focus on improving the clinical management of patients with decompensated cirrhosis. She received her medical degree from Autónoma University School of Medicine in Madrid, Spain, and completed specialty training in gastroenterology at Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal. She subsequently completed advanced training in liver transplantation at Saint James University Hospital in Leeds, England, earned an MSc from Alcalá de Henares University, and a PhD in Medicine from Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Before joining the University of Iowa, Dr. Tejedor Bravo served as Head of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Hospital Universitario Infanta Elena in Madrid. Through her clinical practice, research, and medical education, she continues to advance the understanding and management of advanced cirrhosis and its complications.
A practical, physiology-driven approach to understanding and managing hyponatremia in advanced cirrhosis—from the mechanisms of circulatory dysfunction and impaired water handling to evidence-based bedside treatment strategies.
Hyponatremia is a common and clinically important complication of advanced cirrhosis, reflecting profound alterations in systemic hemodynamics, neurohormonal activation, and renal water handling. Its presence is associated with advanced disease and presents important challenges in the management of patients with decompensated cirrhosis.
In this clinically focused session, Dr. Marta Tejedor Bravo will take participants from the pathophysiologic mechanisms underlying hyponatremia in cirrhosis to practical bedside management. The presentation will review the hemodynamic and neurohormonal changes that lead to impaired free-water excretion, provide a structured approach to evaluating hyponatremia in patients with cirrhosis, and discuss current evidence supporting therapeutic strategies in the acute setting.
Through a pathophysiology-to-practice approach, the session will help clinicians translate an understanding of the underlying mechanisms into rational, individualized treatment decisions.
