Dr. Kris V. Kowdley is an internationally recognized hepatologist and clinical investigator with extensive expertise in cholestatic liver diseases, including primary biliary cholangitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, and inherited cholestatic disorders. He serves as Director of the Liver Institute Northwest, Senior Scientific Advisor and Medical Director at Velocity Clinical Research, and Professor at Washington State University's Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine. Dr. Kowdley has made substantial contributions to clinical research and therapeutic development in hepatology, with particular interests in cholestatic and metabolic liver diseases. His work has helped advance understanding of disease mechanisms, diagnostic approaches, and novel treatment strategies.
Join internationally recognized hepatologist Dr. Kris Kowdley for an expert discussion on the evaluation of cholestasis and Progressive Familial Intrahepatic Cholestasis (PFIC). Explore diagnostic challenges, advances in genetic testing, the management of cholestatic pruritus, and emerging therapeutic approaches for these complex liver disorders.
Cholestatic liver diseases present significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, particularly when patients experience persistent pruritus and unexplained abnormalities in liver biochemistry. Progressive Familial Intrahepatic Cholestasis (PFIC) represents a group of rare, genetically mediated disorders of bile formation and transport that can manifest across the lifespan.
This expert-led session will explore a practical approach to evaluating cholestasis, including the interpretation of liver biochemical tests, differential diagnosis, imaging, and the role of genetic testing in identifying inherited cholestatic disorders.
Special emphasis will be placed on the pathophysiology and clinical consequences of cholestatic pruritus, contemporary treatment strategies, and emerging therapies targeting bile acid transport and signaling pathways.
Participants will gain practical insights into recognizing PFIC, navigating diagnostic uncertainty, and developing individualized management strategies for patients with challenging cholestatic liver disease.
