EPM completed college and medical school at Boston University (MMEDIC early admission program, Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa). He did his residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital - Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and his clinical fellowship in adult and pediatric abdominal organ transplantation at the University of Pittsburgh.

In addition to the pediatric training received during the two year fellowship, he spent an additional 3 months at the University of Pittsburgh after his fellowship to further specialize in pediatric and pancreatic transplants prior to joining Baylor University Medical Center and Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. While in Texas, he performed adult kidney transplants and both adult and pediatric liver transplants. EPM then joined The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine as Associate Professor of Surgery and Surgical Director Kidney/Pancreas Transplantation. There he also obtained his MBA degree. Prior to joining Hofstra Northwell, he was Professor of Surgery and Director of Abdominal Transplantation at the University of Arizona. In Arizona, he re-established the pediatric kidney transplant program and revitalized the adult kidney transplant program. He also re-established the adult and pediatric liver programs, and the adult pancreas program. At Northwell Health, EPM established the adult and pediatric kidney transplant programs. Based on his belief in a multi-specialty and multidisciplinary approach, he has professorships in Surgery, Medicine, and Pediatrics. EPM also founded the Division of Surgical Innovation at Northwell Health.

EPM authored / co-authored over 250 peer-reviewed manuscripts in journals such as the Am J Transplant, Ann Surg, J Am Coll Surg, J Biol Chem, J Clin Invest, J Exp Med, J Immunol, J Pediatr Surg, J Surg Res, Lancet, Langenbecks Arch Surg, Liver Transpl, New Engl J Med, Pediatr Transplant, Proc Natl Acad Sci, Radiology, Surgery, and Transplantation.

He also authored 5 books: Atlas of Liver Transplantation (translated into Chinese and Japanese), Intestinal and Multivisceral Transplantation, Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation (translated into Spanish), Thyroidectomy: Anatomical Basis of Surgical Technique (translated into Spanish), and Liver Transplantation (currently in press).

EPM served as ad-hoc scientific reviewer for the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases of the National Institutes of Health and was an invited member of the Allergy, Immunology and Transplantation Research Committee (AITRC) NIH – NIAID. He is a former member of the Editorial Board of the journals Transplantation and International Journal of Angiology, and frequently reviews for academic publications in his specialty.

EPM is a member of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, where he served on the Reimbursement, Bylaws, and Program, Publications & Postgraduate Course Committees. Currently he is a member of the UNOS national Kidney Transplantation Committee (representing the New York region), the Medical Advisory Board of LiveOnNY (also served on the Board, Finance Committee, and Research Workgroup), President of the International College of Angiology (also held the office of Secretary General and of President-elect), member of the Executive Council and Board of Directors and Advocacy Committee of the Brooklyn & Long Island Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. He is as well a founding member of multiple committees at Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. In the past he was also Board member of the Donor Network of Arizona (also Medical Advisory Committee member) and of the South-Eastern Organ Procurement Foundation (SEOPF), as well as a member of the Kidney/Pancreas Transplantation Committee of the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network / United Network for Organ Sharing (OPTN/UNOS), the Program Committee of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF New York), the Medical Advisory Committee of the American Liver Foundation (Arizona), and the Research Committee of the American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association.

EPM believes in the importance of media as a way to further benefit society. He has been featured in international, national, and local radio and television programs such as CNN Medical Consult, CNN in Spanish, The Today Show, Fox and Friends, and The View.

EPM has been involved in education, and both clinical and basic science research. During his residency, he dedicated three years to basic science research (received the Abbott Laboratories Research Fellowship of the Crohns and Colitis Foundation of America), ranked in the national top 1% of his clinical residency class, and was named Instructor in Anatomy. Also during this time he received multiple teaching awards. This interest continued during his fellowship, when he received Young Investigator Awards at the First Joint Annual Meeting of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons / American Society of Transplantation and at the XVII World Congress of The Transplantation Society. While at Johns Hopkins, he was awarded a Faculty Research Fellowship by the American College of Surgeons as well as the Bernard Amos Young Investigator Immunology Award for his work on proteomic characterization of organ transplant rejection.

EPM’s current interests include transplant innovation as well as medical technology. He has recently proposed (in a publication in The Lancet) a new approach to directed organ donation and incompatible kidney chains. Through his membership in the UNOS national Kidney Transplantation Committee he contributes to the mandated re-design of the kidney allocation system in the US. EPM also has multiple patents for medical devices. In 2019, Northwell Health invested 2.5 million in the development of one of these devices.
